W&L Picked First in Women’s Tennis Poll

Virginia Wesleyan and Hollins Take Second and Third Place

March 3, 2008

SALEM, Va. --- Washington and Lee University received all 11 first place votes on the way to 121 total points in the 2008 ODAC Women’s Tennis Coaches Poll.  Virginia Wesleyan College received 103 votes for second place and Hollins University holds third place with 102 tallies.

The Generals (25-1, 9-0 ODAC) took home their 16th league crown last season as a prelude to W&L’s defeat of Amherst College to secure the title of NCAA National Champions in 2007.  While faced with the task of replacing former national player of the year, Emily Applegate, W&L is excited to return four All-ODAC First Team selections including seniors Leah Weston and Kelly Will, junior Katie Tabb and sophomore Lauren Caire.

Virginia Wesleyan (18-2, 9-1 ODAC) finished second is last years conference championship after falling to the eventual National Champion, Washington and Lee.  The Marlins return four All-ODAC Second Team selections including senior Keira McMillan, junior Megan Crook and sophomores Imee Bautista, who was also named last season’s Rookie of the Year, and Shannon Sabo.

Hollins Univeristy (11-5, 7-3 ODAC) finished third in last year’s conference championship after beating Bridgewater 6-3 in the third place game.  Hollins returns All-ODAC Second Team selection junior Maggie Bai.
