2004-05 Year in Review
Baseball
Sixth-seeded Hampden-Sydney reeled off four consecutive wins in the
ODAC Tournament, capped off by a 4-3 win over Lynchburg to earn the
conference’s AQ … The Tigers advanced to the Division III
National Championship Series when they captured the South Region
Championship … HSC's season came to an end with losses to Rowan
and Cortland State in Appleton, Wisconsin … Lynchburg’s Lucas
Jones earned Player-of-the-Year honors after he hit .481 with 50
RBI, 36 runs, .535 and .656 on-base and slugging percentages,
respectively … HSC right-handed hurler John Schoenholtz was named
the league’s Pitcher-of-the-Year … The Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
native logged 92.2 innings on the bump, going 11-2 with a 2.14 ERA
while striking out 85 batters … Tiger backstop Jason Bour was
selected by the ODAC skippers as the league’s Rookie-of-the-Year.
The Centreville, Va., native played in 33 games hitting at a .356
clip. Bour hit two home runs and drove in 33 runners on the season
… HSC’s Jeff Kinne was named Coach-of-the-Year by his peers
after leading the sixth-seeded Tigers to their first ODAC title
since 1989. Kinne’s squad finished the season with a 27-15 on the
year.
Men’s Basketball
Virginia Wesleyan topped
Randolph-Macon 71-57 in the ODAC Tournament finals to capture the
league title and advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Marlins opened
up with a first-round win over New Jersey City, 76-57 before falling
to eventual Final Four participant York College, 90-80, in the
second-round … Yellow Jacket junior center Justin Wansley was
given the Kurt Axe Player-of-the-Year Award and earned First-Team
All-America honors after posting 18.6 points a game and led the
league with 10.2 rebounds a contest … Bridgewater’s Bill
Leatherman was honored by his peers with his fourth
Coach-of-the-Year honor. In his 20th season patrolling the sidelines
in the ODAC, Leatherman led his team to a 17-8, overall record, a
12-6 mark in the league … Kerry Atkinson from Guilford was named
the league’s Freshman-of-the-Year … Clay Michael of Bridgewater
was named the Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Women’s Basketball
Behind ODAC
Player-of-the-Year and First-Team All-America Megan Silva,
Randolph-Macon finished the regular season with a perfect 20-0
record in the league and went on to earn the league’s bid to the
NCAA Tournament with a 72-55 win over Bridgewater in the ODAC finals
… The Yellow Jackets won their first three tournament games,
defeating Mary Washington (89-76), Trinity (Texas) (82-79 in
overtime), George Fox (63-51) and earned a spot in the National
Championship game when they defeated then number-one Scranton 70-65
in the semis before losing to Millikin, 70-50, in the title game …
Silva finished the season leading the league in scoring with a 19.9
points per game average and ranked 10th or better in six ODAC
statistical categories, including a league-leading 5.5 assists per
contest. The Glen Allen, Va., native also accepted the league’s
Scholar-Athlete of the Year award … Yellow Jacket head coach
Carroll LaHaye was tabbed by her peers as the league’s top mentor.
A veteran of 23 years at the Ashland, Va., college, LaHaye did what
no other coach has done in the ODAC – lead her team to a 20-0
record … Roanoke’s Erin Hanson was named the conference’s
Freshman-of-the-Year after averaging in double figures with 13.2 ppg.
Women’s Cross-Country
Washington and Lee won its
eighth ODAC championship with 27 points when the Generals placed
three runners in the top six spots at the league meet in
Harrisonburg, Va. … Roanoke was second with 48 points followed by
Lynchburg which had 74 points … General Lindsay Erickson was the
top overall runner with a time of 24:42.89 earning Runner and
Freshman-of-the-Year honors … Erickson earned a spot at the
National Championship race at the University of Wisconsin - Eau
Claire where she finished 84th out of 215 runners … W&L’s
Kris Hoey was recognized by her peers as the Coach-of-the-Year and
LC’s Kelly Archibald was awarded Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year
honors by the ODAC sports information directors.
Men’s Cross-Country
ODAC Runner-of-the-Year
Nathan Johnson paced Washington and Lee (32-points) to a first-place
team finish at the league championship with a top-time of 28:15.56
… Roanoke came in second with 46 points followed by Lynchburg with
55 points … Johnson was followed by his teammate, second-place
finisher and Freshman-of-the-Year Alex Mahoney … Johnson advanced
to the National Championship race at UW-Eau Claire were he placed
83rd out of 215 runners … W&L's John Tucker was honored as the
league’s Coach-of-the-Year and Johnson was named the Scholar
Athlete-of-the-Year.
Equestrian
Randolph Macon Woman’s
College won the 2005 ODAC Equestrian Championship, which was hosted
by Hollins University. The Wildcats totaled 19 points. Washington
& Lee (17 points) was named Reserve Champion. Hollins and
Bridgewater finished tied for third place with 10 points …
Randolph Macon Woman’s College took home two of the top individual
awards, with J.T. Tallon being named Coach of the Year and Codi
Lambert named Rider-of-the-Year with an 82.5pt average in the show.
Bridgewater’s Alison Noe was named Freshman-of-the-Year after
averaging 81.75pts ... Hollins junior Jennifer Champagne was named
the ODAC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Field Hockey
Virginia Wesleyan captured
the league championship with a 2-1 win over top-seeded and
home-standing Lynchburg in the ODAC finals … The Marlins advanced
to the NCAA Tournament where they were topped by Messiah, 6-1 …
LC’s Andrea Fleming earned Player-of-the-Year honors after leading
the league with 32 goals for the season … Roanoke’s Liz Hudson
was named the Freshman-of-the-Year after scoring a team-best 17
goals. She added four assists for 38 points which was good for
fourth-best in the ODAC … Hornets head coach Enza Steele was named
the Coach-of-the-Year after directing LC to a perfect 9-0 regular
season mark in the ODAC and a 16-5 overall record … Jonalyn
Denlinger of Eastern Mennonite was awarded the
Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year award.
Football
For the fourth consecutive
year, Bridgewater ran the table (6-0) in league play to capture the
ODAC crown and advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles lost their
first round contest at Washington and Jefferson, 55-48, in double
overtime … Hampden-Sydney running back CW Clemmons capped a
stellar career rushing for a league best 1,098-yards, he also pulled
in 31 passes for 366 yards and scored a combined 13 touchdowns on
his way to receiving the ODAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year award and
setting the ODAC career scoring mark with 282 points and 46
touchdowns … BC defensive lineman Lawrence Frierson won the first
ODAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year honor after making 42 tackles, 11
of which were for losses and three sacks on the season … HSC wide
out Drew Smith took Rookie-of-the-Year honors after hauling in 30
passes for 648 yards and 10 touchdowns … Washington and Lee field
general Frank Miriello was tabbed Coach-of-the-Year. W&L went
6-4 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC … Clemmons was also named the
Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year by the league’s Sports Information
Directors.
Golf
For the second time in four
years the Quakers of Guilford College won the NCAA Division III
National Championship, running away with the title by 25 strokes in
Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. … Colin Clark and Dave Patterson paced
GC, tying for first-place at the national championship. Clark won
the medallist competition, topping Patterson in a one-hole playoff
… Randolph-Macon won the school’s first OCAC golf title topping
the field at the league tournament … RMC shot a 628 to edge
Washington and Lee by four strokes. Guilford placed third (635
strokes) followed by Bridgewater (655 strokes) … Yellow Jacket
Blake Smith took individual honors at the league championships,
shooting nine over par … Clark was selected by the league’s
coaches as the 2005 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)
Golfer-of-the-Year. Clark finished second at the league championship
and led the ODAC in stroke average with a 74.5 average in 21-rounds
… Nathaniel James of Washington and Lee earned
Freshman-of-the-Year honors after compiling a stroke average of 74.9
in 21-rounds … Jeff Burns was selected as the Coach-of-the-Year
after leading Randolph-Macon to the school’s first league
championship.
Men’s Indoor Track and
Field
Lynchburg successfully
defended its title at the ODAC Indoor Track and Field Championship
meet held in Newport News, Va. LC accumulated 247.5 points to take
the title and was followed by second place Eastern Mennonite with 73
points and Roanoke in third-place with 49 points. Mike Lansdowne was
named the Athlete-of-the-Meet winning three championships in the
200-meter dash (22.29), the 400-meter dash (49.74) and was a member
of the LC winning 4x400 relay team … Teammate Brian Viar was
tabbed as the Freshman-of-the-Year after winning the 55-meter
hurdles in 8.09 and cleared 6-02 to win the high jump. He also
placed second in the long jump and third in the triple jump … Dr.
Jack M. Toms of Lynchburg was named the Coach-of-the-Year and
W&L's Nathan Johnson was the Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year …
Lansdowne qualified nationally in the 400-meters, earning
All-American status. His teammate Ryan Holmes qualified for the
triple jump.
Women’s Indoor
Track and Field
The Hornets of Lynchburg
College won their eighth ODAC championship, posting 152 total points
to finish ahead of second place Roanoke (95 points) and third-place
Eastern Mennonite (94 points) … Ashley Palmer of LC took home
Athlete-of-the-Meet honors winning the 200-meter (27.11) and
400-meter (59.48) dashes and the long jump (16-02.50). She was also
member of the title-winning 4x400 relay team, and placed second in
the 55-meter hurdles and sixth in the 55-meter dash … Casandra
Williams of Roanoke was named Rookie-of-the-Year on the strength of
her win in the 55-meter dash (7.45). She also went on to take second
place overall in the 200 meters, finishing the race in 27.23. To cap
off her night, Williams was a part of the Roanoke 4x400 meter relay
team that placed second overall … Dr. Jack M. Toms of Lynchburg
was honored as the Coach-of-the-Year and Wendy Driver of Eastern
Mennonite was recognized by the league’s Sports Information
Directors as the Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year … Palmer qualified
for the NCAA National Competition in the 400-meters and long jump,
while Megan Mlinarchik of Eastern Mennonite qualified in the pole
vault.
Men’s Lacrosse
Lynchburg downed Roanoke
11-10 in thrilling fashion to capture the ODAC championship and
conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament … Despite
falling to LC, RC earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament where the
Maroons downed Widener 18-12, while Lynchburg topped Denison, 9-6,
in second-round action. The two squared off in the third-round of
the tournament with Roanoke prevailing 10-9 before losing to
eventual champion Salisbury 13-11 in the semifinals … Maroon
keeper Matt Madalon was tabbed as the Player-of-the-Year. The junior
posted an 8.37 goals-against average and a. 619 save percentage in
leading RC to a 15-3 overall record … LC net minder Garrett Curran
was named the Freshman-of-the-Year after posting a league best 6.94
GAA and a .605 save percentage, helping LC to a 13-5 overall mark
… Roanoke’s Bill Pilat and Lynchburg’s Steve Koudelka shared
Coach-of-the-Year honors. The award was Pilat’s sixth and
Koudelka’s second … A.J. Tinklepaugh of LC was named the Scholar
Athlete-of-the-Year.
Women’s Lacrosse
Head Coach Jan Hathorn led
the Washington and Lee Generals to their third consecutive ODAC
championship with a thrilling 6-5 win over Randolph-Macon …
W&L won its first NCAA Tournament game with an 11-9 victory over
then number-four Amherst before being upended by Salisbury, 15-4 …
General Kristen Brown was named ODAC Player-of-the-Year in a season
in which she started all 19 games for W&L scoring nine goals,
picking up 46 ground balls, winning 13 draw controls and causing 16
turnovers … Hathorn was honored by her peers by being named the
2005 ODAC Coach-of-the-Year after leading the Generals to a perfect
8-0 mark in the league and an overall record of 15-4. It was
Hathorn’s third consecutive coach-of-the-year honor and her
seventh overall since joining the program in 1988 … Ellie Donahue
of Sweet Briar took home Rookie-of-the-Year honors after finishing
third in the league in scoring with 47 goals in 16 games. Donahue
also had eight assists on the season for a total of 55 points to
earn All-ODAC First-Team recognition … Virginia Wesleyan’s
Kristen Jehl was honored by the ODAC Sports Information Directors as
the 2005 Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year.
Men’s Soccer
For the third time in four years, Roanoke College won the ODAC
Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Maroons
upended Lynchburg 2-0 in the finals to capture the school's seventh
league championship. RC played Arcadia (Pa.) in the opening-round of
the national tournament, bowing out with a 1-0 loss in overtime at
home … Bridgewater ‘s Matt Brock was named the ODAC
Player-of-the-Year in a season in which he scored 12 goals and
dished out 10 assists. Brock’s 34 points were second-best in the
ODAC and helped lead the Eagles to an 8-6-2 overall record, a 4-3-2
mark in the league and an appearance in the ODAC Tournament
semifinals … Roanoke College keeper Austin Rose was named ODAC
Rookie-of-the-Year after leading the Maroons to an ODAC best 7-2
league record. Rose started 19 games, posting a 1.01 goals against
average and eight shut outs … RC head coach Scott Allison and
Lynchburg’s Chris Yeager were named ODAC Co-Coaches-of-the-Year by
their peers … The ODAC Sports Information Directors voted Brett
Ralls of Guilford the Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year.
Women’s Soccer
Lynchburg capped off a
perfect ODAC season with a 1-0 win over Washington and Lee in the
ODAC finals … The Hornets finished the regular season with a
perfect 11-0-0 mark in the ODAC before winning the league tournament
and advancing to the NCAA Tournament where they topped Emory 1-0 in
overtime and lost to Christopher Newport 1-0 in the Round of 16 …
LC keeper Erin Johnson garnered ODAC Player-of-the-Year honors after
posting a league-best 12 shut outs and a 0.19 GAA. Johnson and the
LC defense yielded just six goals all season with her in net.
Johnson was also named ODAC Women’s Soccer
Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year by the league’s Sports Information
Directors … Lauren Askey was named ODAC Rookie-of-the-Year after
starting all 22 games for the Hornets and scoring eight goals …
Lynchburg’s Todd Olsen was named Coach-of-the-Year by his peers.
Softball
Roanoke prevailed as league
champion for the sixth-time in seven-years when it was victorious
over Lynchburg 6-3 in the championship game of the ODAC tournament
… RC opened up the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1, nine-inning win
over Moravian but lost its next game to Salisbury, 6-1, and then a
rematch against Moravian, 5-0 … Christy Mays of Lynchburg was
voted Player-of-the-Year as she hit .403 with a home run and 36 RBI.
Mays had an on-base percentage of .426, made just three errors in
292 chances and ranked in the top five in nine different ODAC
offensive categories … In addition to her performance on the
field, Mays was recognized as the softball
Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year by the league’s Sports Information
Directors … Lyndsi Craig of Roanoke was named the league’s
Pitcher-of-the-Year after leading the Maroons to their second
consecutive ODAC championship. Craig was 14-3 with a 1.53 ERA and
struck out an ODAC best 124 batters in a 114.2 innings pitched …
Bridgewater’s Jennifer Hall took Rookie-of-the-Year honors after
starting all 42 games for BC, batting .384 with three home runs and
19 RBI … Lynchburg skipper Dawn Simmons was tabbed as
Coach-of-the-Year by her peers after leading the Hornets to a 31-9
overall record and an appearance in the ODAC championship game.
Swimming
Washington and Lee continued
to lead the way in the pool with its 12th consecutive league title
in 2005. The Generals claimed 596 points at the ODAC championship
meet to finish ahead of Randolph-Macon (475), Randolph-Macon
Woman’s (249.5), Sweet Briar (230), Hollins (213) and Guilford
(118.5) … Randolph-Macon junior Erin Ewalt was named the
conference Swimmer of the Year for the third consecutive season
after winning three events at the championship including the 200IM,
400Im and 200 backstroke. Ewalt broke two of her own past conference
records in the process with her 2:11.06 mark in the 200 IM and
4:37.89 in the 400 IM. Ewalt was also tabbed the Scholar
Athlete-of-the-Year … Sweet Briar’s Nicole Snyder and
Randolph-Macon’s Sarah Swann were tabbed co-Rookies of the Year
… Sweet Briar’s Jason Gallagher was recognized by his peers as
the ODAC Coach of the Year. Gallagher, in his second year at the
helm of the SBC program, led the Vixen to a fourth place finish in
the conference championship.
Men’s Tennis
The Generals of Washington
and Lee won their 10th-straight conference championship, claiming
four singles flights and all three doubles flights at the ODAC
Championship Tournament … The Generals tallied 85 points and were
followed by Roanoke (76) in second-place and Guilford (66) in third
… In the NCAA Tournament the Generals beat Carnegie Mellon 4-1 in
the first-round before falling to Emory 4-0 in the second-round …
Hampden-Sydney junior Patrick Gee was named the ODAC Player of the
Year after winning the No. 1 singles flight … Roanoke freshman
Kyle Allen was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year after finishing as
the runner-up at No. 2 singles. W&L head coach David Detwiler
was named the ODAC Coach of the Year, while W&L senior Paul
McClure was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a member
of the All-America team after advancing to the NCAA singles
tournament … McClure and his doubles partner David Shay also
competed in the NCAA Tournament and were named All-Americans.
Women’s Tennis
Head Coach Cinda Rankin led
her Washington and Lee Generals to the school's 14th ODAC
Championship in 15 years, a spot in the National Championship match
and helped senior Lindsay Hagerman to the NCAA singles crown … The
Generals swept both the single and doubles flights at the ODAC
Championship to garner 72 points, followed by Emory and Henry with
36 points and Hollins with 32.5 points … W&L won its first
four NCAA team matches downing Swathmore (5-0), Carnegie Mellon
(5-0), Denison (5-1) and Middlebury (5-3) before losing to Emory in
the championship match, 5-3 … Hagerman posted a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win
over DePauw’s Liz Bondi to win the NCAA Singles Championship. She
was also named ODAC Player and Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year, an
All-America and a finalist for the Honda Award presented to the
Division III Female Athlete-of-the-Year.
Men’s Track and Field
Coach-of-the-Year Dr. Jack M.
Toms and his Lynchburg Hornets won their 15th men’s track and
field title in 16-years. Lynchburg accumulated 212 points, followed
by Eastern Mennonite with 117 and Bridgewater College with 98 …
Washington and Lee senior Nathan Johnson earned Male Athlete of the
Meet honors after pulling off the double win in the 1500-meter and
5000-meter runs. He ran the 1500-meter in 4:04.20 and the 5000-meter
in 15:47.60. He was also named the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year
… Roanoke’s Dana Mueller took home ODAC Male Athlete of the Year
accolades. He won the 800-meter run in 1:53.57 and captured fifth in
the 1500-meter run in 4:10.50 … Freshman of the Year honors went
to LC's Brian Viar. Viar won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.54
seconds, placed second in both the high jump at 1.87 meters and the
long jump at 6.70 meters and finished fourth in the triple jump at
13.19 meters … Mueller, Andy Rollins (LC/Pole Vault), Doug
Thomasey (LC/Decathlon), Jeremy Webster (EMU/200-meters) and Ricky
Easterling (BC/High Jump) all qualified nationally, with Easterling
and Thomasey earning All-America honors at the national meet in
Iowa.
Women’s Track and
Field
Behind ODAC Female
Athlete-of-the-Year Ashley Palmer, the Hornets of Lynchburg won
their third consecutive league title … LC recorded 169 points,
followed by Roanoke with 120 points and Eastern Mennonite with 91
team points …Palmer was named the Female Athlete of the Meet after
placing in the top five in eight events and winning four … She set
a new ODAC championship record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time
of 1:05.93. She won the 400-meter dash in 59:39 seconds and the long
jump in 5.24 meters … Meredith Withers of Roanoke won the
100-meter intermediate hurdles in 16.11 seconds, finished third in
the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.53, tied for third in the high jump at
1.58 meters, and ended up fifth in the shot put with a throw of 9.87
meters to earn Rookie-of-the-Year honors … Wendy Driver of Eastern
Mennonite was named Scholar Athlete-of-Year and Dr. Jack M. Toms was
honored as Coach-of-the-Year … Palmer (Heptathlon, 400-Meters,
Long Jump) and Megan Mlinarchik (EMU, Pole Vault) earned
national berths with Palmer achieving All-America status in the
400-Meters.
Volleyball
Washington and Lee won its
fourth-consecutive ODAC title and its eighth in 10 years with a
three-set win over Randolph Macon 30-23, 30-23, 30-13 in the
championship match … The Generals won their opening-round NCAA
match versus Maryville 3-0 (30-28, 30-25, 30-23) before losing to
Emory 3-1 in the second-round … W&L setter Christine Gladysz
was named Player-of-the-Year after dishing out a league best 1, 161
(12.2 apg) assists on the season. She also posted 49 service aces
and 320 digs. Gladysz along with teammate Emily Wolfing were named
All-America … Randolph-Macon setter Elizabeth Kite was presented
ODAC Rookie-of-the-Year honors. Kite was third in the ODAC with 1,
235 assists (10.6 apg). She also had 29 service aces and 299 digs
…After leading his Generals to a perfect 11-0 ODAC record and 24-7
overall mark, Washington and Lee’s Bryan Snyder was recognized as
the 2004 ODAC Coach-of-the-Year … Wolfing was also named the
Scholar-Athlete-of-Year.
