Hornets Get First
Round Bye in Fayetteville (NC) Bracket

LYNCHBURG, Va. ---
The Lynchburg College softball team received a first-round bye in the
upcoming NCAA Division III Championship Tournament and will travel to
Fayetteville, N.C., this weekend to take on the winner of Emory
University and LaGrange College. The contest will be held on Thursday,
May 8, at 4:00 p.m. The entire tournament will use a double-elimination
format.
The
Hornets received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by defeating
Virginia Wesleyan College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)
Tournament championship game on April 27. LaGrange earned its spot in
the tournament as one of 36 automatic bids by winning its conference
tournament (or regular season if no tournament). Emory received one of
18 at-large selections to the 59-team field (also five independent
bids).
Lynchburg is 36-5 on the season, went 16-2 in the ODAC, and is riding a
six-game winning streak. Third baseman Elizabeth Perkins was recently
honored as the ODAC Player of the Year while teammate Katie Bruce was
tabbed the conference’s Rookie of the Year. In all, the Hornets placed
five players on the All-ODAC teams.
Admission prices are $5 for adults and $2 for students and senior
citizens.
