TIGERS UPEND GENERALS, 7-2, TO ADVANCE TO ODAC TITLE GAME

            SALEM , VA — Hampden-Sydney College defeated Washington and Lee University , 7-2, Saturday to advance into the championship contest of the 2005 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Salem Memorial Stadium.  With the win, the sixth-seeded Tigers (23-13) make their first championship game appearance since 1993, while the fifth-seeded Generals (26-12) will play the Virginia Wesleyan/Lynchburg winner Saturday at 7 pm, with the victor advancing into the title game against H-SC at 1 pm Sunday.

 

Hampden-Sydney starting pitcher Larry Greene continued what has become a Tiger trend in the 2005 tournament as he pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three, as H-SC’s starting pitchers have worked 26 and one-third of 27 total innings played by the team.  Meanwhile, the Tiger offense came alive to the tune of 17 hits and seven runs as H-SC handed General starter John Parker his first loss of the season as he gave up seven runs (five earned) over eight and two-thirds innings of work.

 

The top five batters in the Tiger lineup combined for 14 of the team’s 17 hits, led by sophomore rightfielder John Apperson who had four hits in five at bats, while junior centerfielder Chris Padgett and freshman catcher Jason Bour each recorded three hits and drove in a pair of runs.   Meanwhile, junior first baseman Tommy Burk added insurance for the Tigers with a solo homerun, his first of the season, that extended the Tiger lead in the sixth inning.

 

Washington and Lee was paced at the plate by leadoff hitter David Miller, who went 3-for-4, while designated hitter Jordan Wesley went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
