Bridgewater Tops 2006 ODAC Baseball Preseason Poll

 

SALEM , VA Bridgewater has been selected as the favorite by the league’s head coaches in the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Preseason Poll.

 

The Eagles earned a total of 93 points and five first-place votes to take the top spot.  Curt Kendall’s squad went 23-15-1 overall and 15-3 in the ODAC a season ago.


Ricky Read returns to the BC line up this season after hitting .322 in 2005. Read also hit seven home runs and drove in 40 runners as a first baseman and designated hitter.  Read was 5-0 on the mound with a 3.22 ERA as well.

 

Lynchburg landed in the second spot in the poll with a total of 83 points and one first-place vote.  LC went 27-15 overall and posted a 13-5 mark in league play.  2005 First-Team All ODAC outfielder Steven Scott is back in the mix for Hornet head coach Percy Abell.  Scott hit at a .404 clip a season ago with nine home runs and an ODAC best 67 RBIs.

 

Defending ODAC Champion Hampden-Sydney received four first-place votes and a total of 80 points to take the third slot in the poll.  Behind 2005 ODAC Pitcher of the Year John Schoenholtz, the Tigers won four consecutive games in the ODAC Tournament last season to take the school’s first league championship since 1989.  HSC advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they captured the South Region title and became the first ODAC team to advance to the NCAA National Championship round.

 

Virginia Wesleyan earned 79 points to garner the fourth spot in the poll.  The Marlins are followed by Washington and Lee (59 points), Guilford (52 points), Randolph-Macon (42 points), Roanoke (26 points), Eastern Mennonite (24 points) and Emory and Henry (12 points).
