Olean's Ten Strikeout Performance Leads St. Thomas To Win Game 4

NCAA ERA Leader Allows Just One In 4-1 Win Over Marietta

Salem, Virginia - Chris Olean fired a complete game and recorded 10 strikeouts to lead St. Thomas to a 4-1 win over Marietta in the fourth game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships Friday evening at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Olean, who entered the game with an 8-1 record and a 0.52 ERA, allowed seven hits and just one run while recording his sixth complete game of the season. A senior, he had at least one strikeout in the first eight innings. Olean walked just two in the contest, handing out a pair of free passes with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

"The game Olean threw against us tonight was as good as anybody has thrown against us all year," said Marietta coach Don Schaly. "I am not saying we should not have done better against him than we did. You need to give credit where credit is due."

Ryan Hartung led a 10-hit attack for St. Thomas with a 3-for-3 performance. Jon Guion was 2-for-4.

"Once the game starts it's anybody's game, and who gets the hits wins," said St. Thomas coach Dennis Denning. "We only had three guys strike out and had ten hits tonight."

Marietta starting pitcher Dave Bradley allowed 10 hits while suffering his first lost since March 8. He had won 17 consecutive decisions before today's loss, and moves to 18-2 this season.

St. Thomas loaded the bases without an out to open the third inning, capitalizing on a leadoff walk, a single, and hit batsmen. Rich Swenson hit an RBI single, and Paul Rafferty had a run-scoring fielder's choice to give the Tommies a 2-0 lead.

Steve Aronson hit a one-out triple in the St. Thomas sixth and scored on Rafferty's single. The Tommies added another run in the seventh as Guion led off the inning with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Hartung single.

Marietta got its only run in the eighth inning. Todd Yoder singled to open the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Mike Menke. Menke moved to third on a single by Todd Timmer and scored on a single by Dan Geudtner.

Despite two errors Marietta's defense was superb, tying an NCAA Championship finals record by turning five double plays including four in the game's final five innings.

St. Thomas (40-5) advances in the winners' bracket where it will play William Paterson (30-12) at 7 p.m. tomorrow night. Marietta (49-7) will play Aurora (38-7) at 3 p.m. tomorrow in an elimination game.
