Roger Williams got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning on a fielders choice by sophomore Bill Hawkins (Johnston, R.I.). The Lyons countered in the last of the first, on an RBI double by senior Chris Denorfia (Southington, Conn.). The Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when freshman John Morano (North Providence, R.I.) belted his fourth home run of the season. Wheaton tied the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Brett Edmunds (Wolfeboro, N.H.), before the Hawks took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Hawkins scored on a Wheaton error. The Lyons took a 4-3 lead in the last of the fifth, on a one-out, two-rbi double from DeMartino, which plated Denorfia and Whalen.
However, the lead was short-lived, as junior Robert Borland (New Windsor, N.Y.) hit an rbi single to left, which knotted the game at 4-all. Wheaton used a two-run sixth to break the 4-all tie and take the lead for good. Beatties rbi triple made the score 5-4, while Denofrias rbi double gave Wheaton a 6-4 lead. The Lyons added two more in the seventh inning, and lead, 8-4, after eight innings of play. Roger Williams loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth and cut the lead to 8-6. However, a ground out, strike out, and ground out ended the Hawks chances to tying the game.
Sophomore Mike Parlato (Bethlehem, Conn.) earned the win for the Lyons, pitching 2.2 innings of work in relief of starter Trevor Alexander (Wilton, Maine), who pitched the first 5.1 innings. Junior Josh Rosen, who took the loss on the mound, was 3-for-4 for the Hawks, who will play tomorrow at noon. Wheaton will play tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Wildman had an RBI single, senior Jared Holowaty (Columbia, Conn.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and freshman Tom Koch (Warwick, R.I.) had an rbi single. Eastern Conn. added two more in the fourth inning as senior Inaki Ormaechea (New Britain, Conn.) and junior Jeff Funaro (Milford, Conn.) each scored runs, the latter coming on a Wildman rbi single.
After Suffolk scored its lone run in the top of the fifth inning, the Warriors increased their lead to 6-1 in the last of the sixth as senior John Kubachka (Seymour, Conn.) scored on a sacrifice fly. Eastern Connecticut rounded out the scoring, scoring a pair in the seventh inning and one more in the eighth inning.
Serfass was in control the whole game, throwing just 99 pitches, walking one and striking out 10 batters. Suffolk was led by freshman Mike Maguire (Medford, Mass.), who had a pair of hits. Rams sophomore Anthony Del Prete (Waltham, Mass.) pitched a complete game and had three strikeouts. Suffolk will play Roger Williams Friday at noon in an elimination game. Brandeis jumped on the board first, when senior Jim Freethey (Manchester, N.H.) led off the game with his fourth home run of the season. The Jumbos evened the score at 1-all in the home half of the first when junior Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, Ore.), who was 2-for-3 with four runs scored, scored on a sacrifice fly. Brandeis took the lead again in the top of the third when senior Mike Dowdy (Waltham, Mass.) scored on fielders choice. However, the lead was short-lived as Shapiro hit his seventh home run of the season, a two-run blast to left. The Jumbos added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and tallied one time in the eighth, to round out the scoring.
Lee scattered nine hits over nine innings to improve to 7-1. Brandeis junior Tom McShane (Manchester, N.H.) pitched 5.2 innings to take the loss, He allowed seven runs on nine hits during that span to drop to 8-4. Brandeis will face Wheaton Friday at 3:30 p.m., while Tufts will face Eastern Connecticut Friday at 7 p.m.

Roger Williams then tied the score in the last of the last of the eighth inning, on an rbi single by Robinson.

The top-seeded Lyons (36-7-1) jumped out to a 2-0 second inning lead on a pair of RBI singles by seniors Zachariah Brown (Ashland, Mass.) and Marc Senia (South Windsor, Conn.), but the fourth-seeded Judges (25-14) sliced their deficit in half with a single run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by sophomore Dan McIntosh (Falmouth, Mass.).

Scott Beattie drove in three runs with four hits and scored twice to lead the top-seeded Wheaton College baseball team to a 7-4 win over Eastern Connecticut State University Sunday, dropping the Warriors into the losers bracket in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament at Whitehouse Field. Second-seeded Eastern (32-10-1) was scheduled to face third-seeded Tufts University (27-9-1) Sunday at 7 p.m. The Jumbos eliminated fifth-seeded Suffolk University in Sunday's second game 7-1 to remain alive and set up a re-match with Eastern. The winner advances to Mondays championship round against unbeaten Wheaton (37-7-1) at noon.
Sunday, the Lyons erased an early 2-0 Eastern lead by scoring three times in the third and chasing Eastern starter Adam Czerwinski (SOMERS) with two runs on two hits, three walks, a stolen base and wild pitch in the fourth. Beattie had a two-run opposite-field triple down the right field line in the third and Chris Denorfia followed with an RBI double down the left field line to give Wheaton the 3-2 lead in the third. An outfield throwing error made it 4-2 in the fourth and Beattie pushed the lead to 5-2 with an RBI single to left. That hit chased Czerwinski in favor of sophomore lefty Matt Schumey (ROCKVILLE), who walked a batter to load the bases but prevented further damage by fanning No. 4 batter Damon Whalen on a 3-2 pitch. Schumey allowed only four hits and two runs over the final 4 and one-third innings but Eastern was held in check by winning pitcher Matt Parlato and reliever Mike Spavento. Parlato won his second tournament game by pitching into the eighth and Spavento recorded his nation-leading 19th save by getting the final five outs.

Junior second baseman Morgan Thompson (NORWALK), batting leadoff, had two hits, walked twice and had a sacrifice bunt in five plate appeaerances. Sophomore DH Eugene Julien (BROCKTON, MA), senior third baseman Inaki Ormaechea (NEW BRITAIN) and senior leftfielder John Hedde (STONINGTON) all had two hits. Kubachka was 0-for-4, leaving him with one hit in 11 tournament at-bats.

Second-seeded Eastern (33-10-1) needs two wins over top-seeded Wheaton College (37-7-1) to advance to the national tournament, which gets underway Friday at Appleton, WI.
Tufts, which remained alive Sunday with a 7-1 win over fifth-seeded Suffolk University, used six different pitchers against Eastern , with starter Brian Shapiro allowing the first six runs on four hits over the initial two innings. Four of the runs allowed by Shapiro were unearned and came in the first inning, when the Warriors had only one hit and were aided by two throwing errors, a walk, hit batter and two wild pitches.
Leading 6-1, Eastern pulled away by batting around in the fourth and scoring three runs on three hits and adding three more in the fifth on just one hit ? a two-run triple by senior rightfielder Jared Holowaty (COLUMBIA) ? and exploding for seven more on seven hits in the sixth.

Hall, who fanned five and walking three in equaling his longest career outing got all of his strikeouts in the first two innings. The only hits he allowed came on a one-out single in the third and a one-out infield single in the seventh. He picked off Dan Callahan to end the third, however, induced an inning-ending double play in the seventh.

It marks the 18th straight time that Eastern has advanced to the championship round of the New England tournament. Eastern lost in last years final 11-7 after winning the 1998 crown and going on to capture its third national championship.
