Salisbury Eliminates Wheaton, 8-0 (6 innings)
After a three and a half hour lightning delay, the Salisbury University Seagulls managed to score one run in the bottom half of the sixth inning to defeat Wheaton College, 8-0 in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship being held at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia. With the loss, the Lyons end their season at 33-12-1 overall. The Seagulls advance to face the winner of the Muskingum/Chapman game.
Salisbury led 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth before lightning in the area forced the delay. Play resumed at approximately 5pm eastern time and the Seagulls scored one run in the bottom half of the sixth inning to defeat Wheaton with the eight-run mercy rule.
Leslie White led Salisbury, going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Kareem Falcon finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Serena Fleming also chipped in with two hits for Salisbury while Erin Ruest hit her sixth homerun of the season.
For Wheaton, Maggie Spaziano was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Left fielder Amanda Dow-Allen finished 1-for-2 with a double. Carmella Ranieri, Lori Hill and Jessica Foster all chipped in with singles for the Lyons.
Lacey Lister (30-3) picked up her 30th win of the season as she threw five innings, giving up just six hits and striking out six. Erin Ruest pitched the final inning for the Seagulls. Jackie Demling (25-8) took the loss as she threw 5 1/3 innings, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits and striking out three.
