The University of Scranton had to go into overtime to defeat Wittenberg University, 60-57, to win the 1976 Division III Championship. The title game was tied 51-51 at the end of regulation and Jack Maher, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, hit five unanswered points in the first two minutes of overtime and Wittenberg could not catch up again. Plattsburgh State's Ronnie Wright led the tournament in scoring with 117 points, a record total for five games. Mike Glynn of CCNY scored 50 points in his two games to establish the best scoring average in the tournament and Scranton's Irv Johnson hit a remarkable 78 percent of his shots from the field to lead that category.
