The 1977 Tournament

All-Tournament Team
Rick White, Wittenberg
Phil Smyczrk, Hamline
Paul Miernicki, Scranton
Clyde Eberhardt, Wittenberg
Ralph Christian, Oneonta State

Wittenberg University moved from runner-up to champion with a 79-66 win over Oneonta State for the 1977 Division III Championship. Led by forward Rick White's 26 points, the Tigers' 72 percent shooting performance was too much for Oneonta State in the championship game. The Tigers lost an overtime decision to Scranton in the 1976 title game, but they gained sweet revenge for that defeat this year. In semifinal play, Wittenberg defeated Scranton, 53-52, in overtime. While Wittenberg edged Scranton in its semifinal game, Oneonta State defeated Hamline 61-56 to move into the final. White, who scored a record 46 field goals during the competition, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
