Winning the tournament's most outstanding player award for the second consecutive year, Michael Harper led North Park to a 66-62 win against Potsdam State and the 1979 Division III Championship. North Park didn't have an easy task, needing 10 free throws in the game's final four minutes. The Vikings had led 43-28 with 16 minutes to play before Potsdam staged a furious rally to pull within two points at the 1:28 mark. Harper finished the title game with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Harper led all scorers with 111 points and all rebounders with 58 in the competition. North Park had survived a scare early in the tournament, squeezing past Beloit 63-62 in the opening round. With its victory, North Park became the first school to win two Division III titles since competition began in 1975.
