Pete Metzelaars of Wabash led a one-man assault on the
tournament record book, setting marks for most points (129), most
field goals (54) and field-goal percentage (77.1) as his squad blasted
Potsdam State 83-62 for the NCAA Division III crown at Calvin.
Metzelaars finished his career with a Division III record field-goal
percentage of 73 percent. Another tourney mark was at by teammate
Merlin Nice, who hit all of his 24 free-throw attempts. Wabash drew
California State-Stanislaus and prevailed 68-64 to move into the
championship. Metzelaars was named the tourney's most outstanding
player.
