Scranton become the second school in Division III men's basketball history to win a second NCAA championship when the Royals defeated Wittenberg 64-63 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Both Scranton and Wittenberg made their eighth appearance in nine years of the Division III tourney play. Scranton survived a scare in regional play when the Royals beat Widener 74-69 in a regional title contest that took three overtimes. Scranton then edged perennial-powerhouse Potsdam State 65-64 in quarterfinal play. Wittenberg beat Hope College 63-55 in regionals and then bested Cal State Stanislaus 68-65 to move on to the the final four action at the Calvin College Fieldhouse. In semifinal games Scranton beat Roanoke 82-67, while Wittenberg topped Wisconsin-Whitewater 85-80.
