A Cinderella season for Potsdam State didn't lose its charm during the national championships as the Bears roared to an undefeated record and their second Division III title. Coach Jerry Welsh's squad finished 1986 with an unblemished 32-0 mark while outscoring opponents by an average of 27 points per game during the regular season. In the championship game, Potsdam was again tested, this time by veteran coach Jerry Johnson's LeMoyne-Owen squad. Keys to the Potsdam win were 63.3% field-goal shooting by the Bears (31-for-49) compared with 44.4% by LeMoyne-Owen (32-for-72). Roosevelt Bullock, of Potsdam was named the tournament's most outstanding player.
