The
1987 Tournament
All-Tournament Team
Michael Starks, North Park
Mike Barach, North Park
Steve Iannarino, Wittenberg
Kermit Sharp, Clark
Donald Ellison, Stockton State
North Park College established itself as one of the
nation's premier basketball schools at any level with its fifth NCAA
Division III championship in 13 years. In the championship game North
Park faced another final four frequent flyer when it met Clark
College, a Division III runner-up in 1984. Division I transfer Kermit
Sharp of Clark set a tournament record with 160 points in five games.
The second half saw Clark outscore North Park 70-51 but comeback bid
fell short as North Park held on for a 106-100 final. North Park was
led by Michael Starks, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, who
had 30 points and nine rebounds in the title game. North Park took on
an equally successful program in semifinal action when it met
Wittenberg University and coach Larry Hunter. The Vikings trailed
42-31 at the half but outscored the Tigers 44-28 in the second stanza
for a 75-70 win.
