Ohio Wesleyan won its first NCAA team title in any sport with a 92-70 victory against Scranton in the finals of the Division III Men's Basketball Championship. Ohio Wesleyan was a first-time participant in the tournament. Scranton made a record 13th appearance. Tournament Most Outstanding Player Scott Tedder of Ohio Wesleyan scored 27 points in the championship game. His scoring total for the championship was just nine points shy of the five-game record of 160 points set in 1987 by Kermit Sharp of Clark (Mass.). Art Tripett paced Scranton's scoring with 20 points. In the consolation game, Nebraska Wesleyan defeated Hartwick, 73-70. The Plainsmen finished third in the championship for the third time in the four years. Steve Brugman led Nebraska Wesleyan with 17 points.
