The Ohio Northern University Polar Bears defeated the Vikings of Augustana, 71-68 March 20 in Buffalo, N.Y. The first NCAA Division III Basketball Championship to be held in the East since 1976 pitted these two Midwestern institutions in the championship game. Ohio Northern played aggressively in the first half heading to the locker room with a 10-point halftime lead. They were able to contain Augustana's Kirk Anderson, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, to two points in the half. Anderson had 20 points in the championship game shooting 4-for-16 from three-point land. He set both Division III tournament records for most three-point field goals in a single game with 12 vs. Wisconsin-Platteville and most in a series with 35. Ohio Northern shot 48.3% from the field and 76% from the free-throw line to hold off the Vikings to capture their first NCAA Division III Championship title. Rowan College (formerly Glassboro State) defeated Mass-Dartmouth (formerly Southeastern Mass) in the third-place game, 72-61.
