The Award's Significance
The trophy bears the name of the Minneapolis, Minnesota company that is a leading provider of products and services that help people recognize achievement and affiliation throughout their lives. Jostens products include yearbooks, class rings, graduation products, school photography and business service and achievement awards. As Jostens celebrated its 100th year recognizing achievement in America, it proudly inaugurated the Jostens Trophy as a symbol of excellence for the Division III student-athlete.
ABOUT THE TROPHY
Designed and sponsored by Jostens and the Rotary Club of Salem, Virginia, this sixty-four pound trophy stands nearly two feet tall and features an eight-inch crystal basketball. This impressive award will honor the Division III Men's and Women's Basketball Outstanding Athletes of the Year. Recipients of the Jostens Trophy must exhibit excellence in basketball, academics and community service. Nominations will be submitted by the Chief Executive Officer of the participating NCAA Division III colleges.
The Process
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE AWARD
Letters are sent to all NCAA Division III schools participating in basketball.
NOMINATIONS RECEIVED
Nominations submitted by the Chief Executive Officer of Division III institutions to the Rotary Club of Salem, Virginia.
NOMINEES SCREENED
Jostens Committee reviews all nominations and selects 10 finalists based on the following criteria:
Basketball ability
GPA requirement
Extra-curricular and/or civic activities exemplifying the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self"
FINALISTS REVIEWED BY NATIONAL COMMITTEE
Names, qualifications and ballots are forwarded to the National Selection Committee. Ballots are returned to the Rotary Club of Salem and counted by Budd & Company, CPA's.
WOOLDRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION FUND, INC.
In addition to the Jostens presentation, the Rotary Club of Salem has created the Wooldridge Scholarship Foundation Fund, Inc. Each trophy recipient will be honored with a $1,000 scholarship given to their institution in their name. The scholarship has been named in honor of Dan Wooldridge, a Salem Rotarian and the retired commissioner of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The scholarship was devised as a way to honor Wooldridge for his love of, and longtime commitment to, Division III athletics.
