Guilford's Ketchum Leaves Football Post to Serve as Assistant to Athletic
Director
Greensboro, NC -- After serving as head football coach for 14 years at Guilford
College, Mike Ketchum has been appointed to the role of Assistant to the Athletic
Director.
In his new role, Ketchum will oversee the game-day operation of the
Quakers’ home athletic contests. He will coordinate game personnel, security
and site preparation. Guilford sponsors 16 varsity sports, including 13 that
compete on campus.
Ketchum, a 1978 Guilford graduate and former athletic director, leaves the
football post after compiling a 53-85 overall record and a 27-49 mark in the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Guilford went 1-9 in 2004 and finished
sixth in the ODAC with a 1-5 record.
Ketchum ranks second on Guilford's career football-coaching wins list and
enjoyed the second-longest tenure among the school's 21 head football coaches.
He received the ODAC Coach of the Year Award in 1991 and 1997 after guiding the
Quakers to league titles both seasons. Both teams won a school-record eight
games and are two of the four 8-2 units to which Ketchum contributed. The 1994
club went 8-2 and spent most of the season ranked among the top teams in the
NCAA Division III South Region. Ketchum was a lineman on Guilford's 8-2 team in
1975.
Quaker Athletic Director Marion Kirby said a national search is underway for
Ketchum's successor. He hopes to have the new coach in place by February. The
new coach inherits 48 student-athletes, including this year's 25 rookies, for
the 2005 campaign.
