RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE NAMES MCEVOY HEAD MEN’S SOCCER COACH

ASHLAND, VA -- Peter McEvoy has been named the head coach of the men's soccer team at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland , Virginia . A graduate of the University of Massachusetts , McEvoy was an assistant coach for the fall 2004 season alongside legendary longtime coach Helmut Werner. Werner retired this winter after 43 years with the Yellow Jackets, in which he compiled a 417-242-66 (62.1%) record in 725 games.

“I am very pleased to have someone with Peter's background following a legend like Helmut Werner,” says Randolph-Macon director of athletics Denis Kanach. “Peter did a great job this past season as Helmut's assistant and brought his own style of enthusiasm and energy to the program. He was well received by the players and alumni and is a great addition to a program with a long tradition of success.”

“I am very honored to have had the opportunity to work with such a veteran coach as Helmut Werner,” McEvoy comments. “I cannot thank Helmut enough for introducing me to Randolph-Macon College as his assistant and supporting my advancement for the head coaching position. My wife Molly and I are very excited to be part of the Yellow Jacket family and in just a short time have already experienced the warmth and friendliness of the community.”

Before coming to Randolph-Macon, McEvoy was head varsity soccer coach at Salisbury School in Connecticut from 2000 to 2004. He also served as associate director of admissions, dorm master, and academic advisor there. McEvoy was co-chair of the New England Senior All-Star Competition as well.

Prior to his position at Salisbury School , McEvoy was an assistant men's soccer coach and co-director of soccer camps at the University of Richmond from 1997 to 2000. In addition, during his time there he was assistant director of operations for the NCAA Division I soccer "Final Four" in 1997-98, co-director of the YES Clinic in 1997-98, and co-director of an international event featuring the United States and Jamaican U-20 national teams in 1998.

McEvoy also served as head coach of the Richmond Capitals travel team from 1997 to 2000, head boy's varsity soccer coach at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts from 1996 to 1997, and assistant men's soccer coach at Amherst College (1995-1996) and Wheaton College (1994-1995), both in Massachusetts. He assisted with operations for the 1994 World Cup as well.

As a student-athlete at the University of Massachusetts , McEvoy was a two-year captain for the men's soccer team. During his career he was the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, all-conference, and two-time all-NEISL. Before attending Massachusetts , McEvoy graduated from Deerfield Academy , where he was a first-team All-American.

McEvoy received a B.S. degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts in 1997. He received his Advanced National Diploma Coaching License, With Distinction, from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 2000. McEvoy and his wife, Molly, have a one-year-old daughter named Calli.

“The R-MC men's soccer team is coming off a successful season in the Old Dominion Conference, and we will return several players in the fall of 2005, including nine starters,” says McEvoy. “The strength of the team returning, the excellent academic reputation, the leadership from athletic director Denis Kanach, the strong sense of school tradition, pride and community, and the location and proximity to the city of Richmond made accepting the head coaching position an exceptionally easy decision."
