W&L’s Lindsay
Hagerman and Paul McClure Named ODAC Scholar Athletes-of-the-Year
SALEM, VA – Washington and Lee’s Lindsay
Hagerman and Paul McClure have been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s
(ODAC) Scholar-Athletes of the Year by the league’s Board of Directors.
Each year
the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) recognizes its top student-athletes
with the “Doc” Jopson and Majorie
Berkley awards. The Jopson award is named after Bridgewater College professor and long-time track
and field coach Harry Jopson. The award is named for Majorie Berkley, a long-time professor at Lynchburg College
and Hollins
University. Ms. Berkley
also served as an assistant director in the ODAC Office in charge of women’s
athletics.
Hagerman,
the Berkley Award winner and a native of Witcha Falls, Texas,
captured the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Singles Championship on Monday. She took ODAC Women’s Scholar
Athlete-of-the-Year honors after posting a 3.64 while majoring in history. The 2004 and 2005 ODAC Player-of-the-Year,
Hagerman also won the 2004 and 2005 Women’s Tennis Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year,
given out by the league’s sports information directors. Hagerman finished as a seven-time All-American. She set a school record with 37 singles wins
(37-1) this year and also holds the W&L all-time record for singles
(117-17) and doubles (108-17) victories.
Off the court,
Hagerman serves as a dorm counselor at W&L, a member of the Student-Athlete
Mentor Group, the Gay-Straight Alliance, was a representative at the NCAA
Leadership Conference, has served as a counselor for the W&L Summer
Scholars program and is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She was also named the 2005 Senior Female
Athlete-of-the-Year at W&L.
McClure
won the Jopson award after garnering a 3.3 GPA while
majoring in Philosophy. McClure was ODAC
Player-of-the-Year in 2003 and 2004, but was unable to defend his title this
season due to an injury. The Memphis, Tenn.
native earned his second spot on the All-American team this year after winning
his opening round match at the NCAA Championship last weekend. The ODAC Sports
Information Directors honored McClure as the 2005 Men’s Tennis Scholar
Athlete-of-the-Year. He finished his career 64-41 in singles and
58-39 in doubles. He helped lead the
Generals to four-straight ODAC championships and four trips to the second-round
of the NCAA Tournament.
Away from
the net, McClure is member of the Reformed University Fellowship, the Calyx
Yearbook staff and Chaplin and rush chairman of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. McClure
was honored earlier this month as W&L’s Senior
Male Athlete-of-the-Year
