The ODAC
and the City of Salem
Chosen to Host the Division III Volleyball Championship
SALEM, VA
– The City of Salem and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) announced
Tuesday that the NCAA Division III National Volleyball Committee has chosen the
Salem Civic Center
as the site for the National Championship Tournament for 2005 & 2006.
“The City of Salem is very
excited to host the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship in 2005 and
2006,” says Salem’s
Director of Civic Facilities Carey Harveycutter. “The quality of play is
excellent and we look forward to a great event. Volleyball enjoys strong
spectator support in the Roanoke
Valley’s high schools and
we expect good crowds for the championship.”
The three day tournament will take place November 17th-19th,
featuring the eight winners of the various regions across the nation. The Quarterfinals will take place during two
sessions at 1:30 p.m./3:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m./8:30 p.m. The semifinals are slated for 4:30 p.m. and
7:00 p.m. on Friday followed by the championship at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Tickets for the event will go on sale in October with prices
ranging from six-dollars for adults, four-dollars for students and
three-dollars for children and senior citizens.
Juniata (Pa.) of the
Commonwealth Conference captured last year’s National Championship with a three
set win over Washington-St. Louis (30-27, 30-27, 30-28) at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester,
Minnesota.
"We are honored to host the DIII Volleyball
Championship for the next two years,” says ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston.
“The successful bid is a direct result of the City of Salem's proficient hosting of 30+ NCAA
championships over the past 12 years. We look forward to working with the city,
welcoming the top eight volleyball programs in DIII and know it will be a
wonderful environment for the student-athletes to compete."
This year’s tournament will mark the first-time the eight
regional winners will square off at one pre-determined site and the 2005-06
academic year marks the 25th Anniversary for NCAA Women’s
Championships.
