Virginia Wesleyan Wins ODAC Baseball Championship With a 7-6 Win Over Bridgewater

LYNCHBURG, VA – Matt Hudgins singled off the right field wall scoring Dan Sellers from first-base in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Virginia Wesleyan to 7-6 victory over Bridgewater in the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Championship Game.

The win gives the Marlins (22-20) it’s sixth ODAC Championship and their third title in four years. In addition, VWC receives the ODAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament which begins May 17^th.

Bridgewater (29-12-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jono Brooks opened the frame with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Ricky Read single.

In the fourth inning with two-outs and the bases loaded, BC’s Justin Showalter delivered and RBI single to plate two runs and give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage.

With two-outs in the Marlin half of the sixth inning, Brandon Hathaway singled to center field, advanced when Mike Cardwell was hit by a pitch and came home with the first VWC run on a hit by Brent Vuyovich. A Sellers single scored Cardwell to make the score 3-2.

VWC pulled ahead with four runs in the seventh inning to make the scored 6-3. The highlight of the inning was a two-out RBI single by Sellers to plate a pair of runs.

Bridgewater cut the lead to 6-4 with a run in eighth and tied the game in the top of the ninth on a two-out single by Zach Foltz that scored a pair.

In the VWC ninth, Sellers reached on an infield single with one out setting the stage for Hudgins off BC reliever Matt Nolen. Read took the loss to drop his record to 8-1 on the season.

Chris Rivera picked up the win for the Marlins after throwing a single inning of relief. The win was his third of the tournament to go along with one save, earning him Most Outstanding Player honors.

He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Ricky Allerd (DH), Cardwell (3B), and Vuyovich (OF). Joining Brooks (SS) and Showalter (2B) on the team from BC was Grant French (C) and Matt Steele (2B). Guilford first-baseman Rob Bittner and Hampden-Sydney's Chris Padgett (OF) were also named to the team.
