VWC
(19-20) got a strong performance on the mound from Zach Baker (4-4) who tossed
seven innings for the Marlins, allowing just four hits, surrendering two runs
and striking out seven Yellow Jackets (21-17).
With
two-out and Brent Vuyovich on second-base in the first inning, Matt Hudgins
doubled off Randolph-Macon starter Travis Beazley to score Vuyovich and give
Virginia Wesleyan the 1-0 lead. Ricky
Allred followed with a bloop single to right field to plate Vuyovich and double
the Marlin advantage.
The
Marlins doubled their lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning.
With two outs and the bases empty, Brandon Hathaway struck out but
reached base on a wild pitch. Mike Cardwell then singled to right field to put
runners on first and second base. Vuyovich
doubled to score both and extend the VWC advantage.
Randolph-Macon
loaded the bases in the eighth inning and cut the deficit in half at 4-2 after
pushing two runs across on RBI ground outs.
The
Yellow Jackets loaded the bases again in that same inning with two outs but
reliever Chris Rivera got David Jayne to ground out to end the inning.
Rivera
closed out the game to pick up his second save, retiring all four batters he
faced in an 1.1 innings of work.
Beazley
suffered the loss after allowing four runs on 11 hits but he did manage to fan
14 in the complete game effort. His
record now stands at 8-3.
Virginia
Wesleyan moves on to play Hampden-Sydney at 7:00 p.m. while Randolph-Macon will
take on
