PA -- Randolph-Macon
College senior All-American guard Megan Silva (Glen Allen,
VA/Hermitage) broke the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)
women’s basketball career assists record in a 79-67 win at
Alvernia College (Pa.) Wednesday, February 1st, 2006. She
needed three assists coming into the contest and finished with
five, now totaling 630 for her career. The previous record
was 627, held by Eastern Mennonite’s Suzie French (1984-88).
Silva
is also closing in on the ODAC career steals mark, as she
currently has 395 and needs seven to break the record of 401, also
held by Eastern Mennonite’s French. With five regular
season games and at least one game in the post-season ODAC
tournament remaining, Silva, who has 2,093 points for her career,
needs 191 to become the conference’s all-time leading women’s
basketball scorer. Laura Haynes from
Guilford
scored 2,283 points from 1995 to 1998.
In
addition, Silva, who is already the
Randolph-Macon
College
women’s basketball program’s all-time career leader in points,
assists and steals, has a chance to surpass the school’s men’s
basketball scoring leader. Fletcher Johnson scored 2,216
points from 1970 to 1975. She is already the all-time steals
leader for either program, as Tim Smith had 192 from 1999 to 2003.
Silva
is a two-time All-American, three-time all-South Region and
first-team all-ODAC selection, and two-time conference and state
Player of the Year. Last season, she helped the Yellow
Jackets to a #2 national ranking and a runner-up finish in the
NCAA Division III tournament.
This
year, Randolph-Macon is 17-2 overall and 15-1 in the ODAC, riding
an 11-game winning streak heading into Thursday night’s game at
Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, and is currently ranked as
high as #12 in the nation in Division III polls. Silva has
been named the ODAC Player of the Week twice this season and has
also been on the D3hoops.com website national Team of the Week
once. She is averaging 22.9 points, 6.3 assists, 2.9 steals
and 4.7 rebounds per contest. In all of NCAA Division III
women’s basketball, Silva is currently ranked #1 in points per
game, #9 in assists per game, and #17 in field goal percentage.
