LYNCHBURG, VA – Sophomore attack Laura Weidema (Pocomoke, MD) scored twice Sunday to lead the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Lynchburg College in the finals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. The Marlins receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships.

Virginia Wesleyan captured its first ever ODAC field hockey title with a 2-1 win over Lynchburg

The top-seeded Hornets got on the scoreboard first, as junior Kara Culkin (Gloucester, VA) found junior Andrea Fleming (Milford, DE) to give LC a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the contest. The Hornets took the 1-0 advantage into halftime, but Weidema scored her first goal of the game at the 25:28 mark, assisted by Cara Byrd (Suffolk, VA). Weidema struck again with 20:35 remaining, assisted by Holley Marchwicki (Boyds, MD). Each team had chances to score in the final minutes, but the Marlins held on for the one-goal victory.

The second-seeded Marlins (17-4) out shot LC 9-7 and held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners. Megan Koster made six saves for Virginia Wesleyan, while Joanne Yednock (Fredericksburg, VA) had seven stops for LC.

Virginia Wesleyan now waits for Sunday evening when it will learn who it will be playing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. LC stands at 16-5.
