ODAC Announces All-Conference Women’s Basketball Honors

RMC’s Megan Silva Repeats as Player of the Year

Salem, Va. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its 2005 postseason women’s basketball awards Wednesday evening at a pre-tournament banquet held at the Salem Civic Center.

League-leading Randolph-Macon College garnered three of the top four post-season awards including Megan Silva as Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Carroll LaHaye as Coach of the Year. Third-seeded Roanoke College received one of the top awards with Erin Hanson winning the Freshman of the Year honor.

RMC junior guard Megan Silva put on a repeat performance in 2005 after being named the conference’s top player in 2004 as well. Silva finished the season leading the league in scoring with a 19.9 points per game average and finding herself ranked tenth or better in six ODAC statistical categories, including a league-leading 5.5 assists per contest. The Glen Allen, Va., native also accepted the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in women’s hoops. She was a key component in the Yellow Jacket’s perfect 20-0 run through the ODAC regular season. In the classroom, Silva posts a 3.71 GPA double majoring in Business and Economics. On campus she serves as the co-manager of the student campus newspaper.

Yellow Jacket head coach Carroll LaHaye was tabbed by her peers as the league’s top mentor. A veteran of 23 years at the Ashland, Va., college, LaHaye did what no other coach has done in the ODAC – leading her team to a 20-0 record. Roanoke College has posted three previous perfect seasons at 18-0, but no one had won 20 conference games in a season. This marks the fifth Coach of the Year award LaHaye has received – her most recent coming in 2003.

Roanoke’s Erin Hanson was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year. Hanson helped lead the Maroons to a third seed in the tournament after starting the season 0-4 prior to holiday break. The Blacksburg, Va., native is the only Roanoke player averaging in double figures with 13.2 ppg. She averages 22 minutes and has posted 6.4 rebounds per contest.
